The Board Puts CEO Reshuffling on the Agenda Amid Current Challenges

Air India has started a hunt for a new Chief Executive Officer, which is an indication that there could be a shake-up at the Tata Group-owned airline. The development is an obvious sign that the management is worried about the rate at which the airline is undergoing a transformation to meet the operational requirements in the competitive sector.

The airline is currently being run by its new CEO, Campbell Wilson, who took over the reins in 2022 when Air India was acquired by Tata Group. The new director’s agenda was primarily ensuing that Air India is revamped and that their reputation outside of India is also restored. Although good strides have been made, the airline’s internal review shows that the pace is not taken kindly.

Despite Campbell Wilson having his contract until 2027, it has been reported that the board has been considering other option when it comes to leadership even earlier than they had anticipated. This indicates that the Tata Group has already started talks with senior managers within the airline industry across the world, including those based in the USA and UK.

Challenges Encounters While Flying Trigger Review

This leadership rethink appears to be the result of growing oversight by regulators, which followed an aircraft fatal incident that happened in 2025. This increased oversight means that Air India’s management must now work even harder to address any loopholes that exist at Air India.

Apart from safety concerns, Air India has other challenges within its operations, including delays in the delivery of planes, slower rehabilitation of its cabin interiors compared to expected rates, and integrating its full-service carrier and low-cost models. These have been said to contribute to discontent among its board members despite considerable investments.

It appears that industry analysts have indicated that the leadership review could spill over into other companies in the Tata Group’s conglomerate, such as Air India Express, which is the low-cost airline offered by the Tata Group’s flagship company.

Although Air India and Tata Group have not officially confirmed that a new CEO is being sought, the fact that a new CEO is being considered is an indicator of the emphasis on speeding up the turnaround at Air India. The hiring of a new CEO is a crucial milestone in the efforts being made by Air India to restore consumer, government, and international goodwill.

However, with heightened competition and expectations, stability in leadership and efficient execution of operations continue to be of prime importance to Air India. The selection of the new CEO may determine, to some extent, the plans and vision of the airline in coming times.

Regulatory pressures have only further intensified after the tragic air disaster of 2025. Though the investigations did not suggest anything relating to mechanical failures, the event highlighted the focus of governance and regulation. Post the tragic incident, it was reported that higher-ups within the administration have held direct discussions with the Tata group on the issue.

The financial performance is also an essential area of challenge. The previous financial year witnessed huge losses incurred by Air India and Air India Express, and this is one of the most essential areas of focus that need to be addressed by the airline in its next phase of expansion.
